Cultural Etiquette

Nepal is a deeply spiritual country — respect is essential. Always remove shoes before entering temples and homes. Walk clockwise around stupas and mani walls. Do not touch religious artifacts or point feet at sacred objects. Dress modestly — cover shoulders and knees at religious sites. The greeting "Namaste" with hands pressed together is always appreciated. Ask permission before photographing people. During festivals be respectful and observe from a distance unless invited. The left hand is considered unclean — always give and receive with the right hand or both hands. Public displays of affection are frowned upon.
